Max nodded grimly, ‘You see, Eladred had underestimated just how much his people prized beauty. It’s not for no reason that the elven artisans are some of the finest in the world. Apparently, they apply this measure of worth to people as well…’

‘You mean…?’

Max raised his eyebrows as he said, ‘You’ll have to admit that Eladred doesn’t look much like a prince, eh? He shouldn’t have insulted the sylvan court by presuming to introduce his ugliness into the royal family.’

‘Eladred was humiliated because he wasn’t handsome enought?’ Wykka said, incredulous.

Max sighed. ‘Unfortunately, that was not the end. Several years later, the princess married. The issue from that union was less than comely. To be specific, the baby had a birthmark the size of a peach on its right cheek. The King declared the offspring a changeling, and cast it into the fire. The princess was driven insane after her pleas to spare her baby were ignored.’

‘Light of Rah,’ was all Wykka could manage.

‘A lesser man may think that a fitting end for a woman who had spruned him so. But not Eladred. In spite of the rejection and the hurt he had suffered, he still loved the princess. He could not let the matter rest.’

‘What happened?’

‘Eladred went to the Temple of the Stars during the Festival of Krolwyn, wherein by elven law, a man may speak his mind without fear of reprisal. There, before he gathered multitude of his people, he cursed the entire sylvan court. He vowed to leave the elf nation, never to return – unless and until his people had learned the error of their ways. Or as a conqueror who would whip the vain bigotry from their bones.’

Wykka gasped. Eladred was a braver man than his clownish face suggested. ‘What did the Elf King do then?’

‘Nothing. Eladred was in the Temple of the Stars, during the Festival of Krolwyn. A law older and greater than the King protected him. Besides, Eladred had already imposed exile on himself. True to his vow, he never went back. It’s been over 2 decades, but elves live for centuries. He hides his grief behind a wall of cynical self-interest. But it’s a sham.’

‘I never would have guessed…’

‘This is why Eladred has such contempt for elves. Yet, at the same time, he yearns fot the fellowship of his own kind.’

‘That’s so sad.’

The dwarf smiled sardonically, ‘Ah, if you knew but speck from the ocean of tragedies happening in the world, you would not have enough tears to spare on this one…’

As they arose to greet Eladred’s return, Wykka thought of his own dead sisters, and wondered what Max’s story was.
